PETRONAS Energy Gallery

Energy, ecology and a journey of discovery.

PETRONAS Energy Gallery — project photograph 1
01 / 04

A gallery that connects the story of energy with Terengganu’s coastal life, marine ecosystems and future possibilities.

The brief

Translate energy knowledge and Terengganu’s local story into an accessible visitor experience.

The response

A sequence of atmospheric environments with integrated exhibits, media and specific material-reuse interventions.

The brief: connect energy with place

The gallery introduces the relationship between PETRONAS and Terengganu through the past, present and future of energy. Its spatial narrative connects local coastal life, offshore exploration, education, environmental stewardship and emerging technologies. The interior turns complex subject matter into a sequence of accessible experiences.

The journey: from a fishing village to future possibilities

A fishing boat and village-inspired structures establish a familiar point of departure. Visitors encounter offshore energy, petrochemical applications, motorsport and education before exploring future themes such as green mobility and hydrogen. Transitions between these subjects give the exhibition a clear rhythm of discovery.

The atmosphere: a walk through the mangroves

The mangrove passage combines a timber walkway, fibre-optic lighting, environmental sound and projected imagery. It creates a change of pace within the gallery and links the energy narrative to the ecosystems of Terengganu. The turtle sanctuary theme continues that coastal connection.

The interpretation: objects, media and moments of participation

A performance motorcycle brings engineering and motorsport into focus, while multimedia presentations introduce the scale and complexity of offshore infrastructure. Theatre and engagement spaces accommodate deeper storytelling. Interior design, exhibit content, light and media are developed as parts of one visitor experience.

The reuse strategy: begin with the previous installation

Existing stainless-steel guide rails were reclaimed as structural bases for display showcases. Rubber floor tiles were removed, cleaned and reused in the oil-platform zone. Reclaimed timber was incorporated into village-inspired structures, giving elements of the previous installation another role.

The material detail: make circular thinking visible

Repurposed sports flooring contributes to the turtle sanctuary setting. Recycled plastic panels, OSB boards and reclaimed metal sheets form the fishing-boat display platform. Recycled HDPE gas-tank caps became panels and furniture in the theatre area. Each material serves a particular purpose within the exhibition rather than acting only as a sustainability label.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT / TECHNICAL NOTES

How the idea was resolved.

01

Exhibition programming

The proposed sequence in Edition 2 moves from entrance and ticketing through past, present and future energy themes to the exit. Theatre and engagement spaces support a separate programme of deeper interpretation.

02

Exhibit structure & reuse

Stainless-steel guide rails from the previous installation were repurposed as display bases. Existing rubber floor tiles were cleaned for the oil-platform zone; reclaimed timber formed village-inspired structures.

03

Material applications

Recycled plastic panels, OSB and reclaimed metal form the fishing-boat display platform. Recycled HDPE gas-tank caps become theatre panels and furniture, connecting each material to a defined use.

04

Media & atmosphere

The mangrove passage coordinates a timber walkway, fibre-optic light, sound and projected imagery. The change in atmosphere marks a transition within the exhibition narrative.
